Gillian Norton, Chairman

Dear Colleague

Thank you for showing an interest in the board posts at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

I have been Chairman of the Trust since April 2017, having previously served as a Non-Executive Director from June 2016. Since joining the Trust, I have been genuinely impressed by the many dedicated, talented and hardworking people who choose to work here.

There are also many interested and enthusiastic people living in our communities who care passionately about St George's, and the services we provide. They together with our many partner organisations want to make St George's a great place to be treated as a patient and to work. Our vision, which is central to our new strategy, is to provide outstanding care, every time for our patients, staff and the communities we serve.

The Trust has a proud history of delivering high quality care. We offer a unique mix of services – from local and tertiary hospital based services, to those based in community settings. Our reach is significant – in total, the Trust serves a population of 1.3 million people across south west London and a number of our specialist services, such as neurosciences and renal transplantation, serve a further 3.5 million across Surrey and Sussex.

St George’s has experienced some significant challenges in recent times, and we are currently in both quality and financial special measures. However, in the past two years we have made great strides forward. Last December, we achieved an improved rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC). In March, we returned to national reporting on referral-to-treatment time, which means we have accurate waiting lists in which our patients and staff can have confidence. In April, we launched our new clinical strategy which sets the direction and priorities for the Trust for the next five years and clarity about what we want to achieve in future and how we will get there. We have become a more outward facing organisation and are now working in closer collaboration with our partners. We have also reduced our deficit in each of the last two years.

Whilst we are making progress, we don't underestimate the scale of the challenge we face and the need to make further improvements. Today, the services we provide show a picture of outstanding practice in some areas, plus others that need more help to succeed.

We have the potential to make St George’s great again – to achieve our ambition of providing outstanding care, every time for our patients, staff and the communities we serve. This is why we are looking for people who are excited at being part of this proposition and, crucially, who share our values of being Excellent, Kind, Respectful and Responsible.
